WINK News featured a story as Southwest Florida Proton continues working on interior portions of its new cancer treatment center in Estero.
Health Reporter Amy Oshier enjoyed an exclusive tour of the building and spoke with Managing Partner Dr. Arie Dosoretz and Dr. Todd Pezzi. Both are board-certified radiation oncologists at Advocate Radiation Oncology and have played integral roles in developing Southwest Florida Proton.
The news story noted the massive size of a proton machine and how it will be housed in a room exceeding 5,000 square feet. Additionally, the story explains the science of proton therapy, which requires a jumbo cyclotron to speed up protons and separate them from hydrogen atoms before turning that energy into a beam directed toward the body.
Dr. Dosoretz noted the precision of proton therapy is advantageous for patients: “You can treat a tumor right up against the spinal cord or part of the brain,” he told Oshier.
