WGCU produced a story announcing that Lee Healthcare Holdings, a subsidiary of Lee Health, would be a partner of Southwest Florida Proton. Reporter Sheldon Zoldan noted that Lee Health would be investing in the project as well as running a diagnostic imaging center in the facility.
The news story quotes Managing Partner Dr. Arie Dosoretz, a board-certified radiation oncologist with Advocate Radiation Oncology, as well as Lee Health COO Dr. Scott Nygaard and CEO Dr. Larry Antonucci.
Proton therapy is more precise than radiation oncology. By targeting only the tumor, treatments can limit damage to healthy tissue and cause fewer side effects. The story notes that proton therapy is especially recommended for hard-to-reach areas, including the spine, brain, threat and left-sided breast cancers. It also is helpful for infants and children with cancer because it lowers cancer risks associated with normal radiation.
WGCU, which is based at Florida Gulf Coast University, operates a website, radio station, TV station and social media channels. The nonprofit also provides PBS and NPR programming in Southwest Florida. Programs air 24 hours a day.
